Fashion flair affordable at store

New Year’s Eve offers the perfect opportunity to dare to wear something unexpected, something you might never consider on any other day of the year. While you might not usually wear a slinky dress and flashy chandelier earrings, you can go a little over the top when you’re ringing in 2007.

With two full walls of sparkly, dangly jewelry (starting at prices as low as $1.65 for a pair of silver dangle earrings) and racks filled with young, trendy clothes, a new shop in Glendale is a great place to find that out-of-the ordinary but very affordable outfit.

Fashion Co. opened in October in the Best Buy shopping center at 83rd Avenue and Bell Road. Owner Kyong Kim says the shop imports its vast selection of clothing and accessories from countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and the Philippines.

While the shop also offers wholesale prices, much of its business has come from people like Surprise residents Maricela Becerra, 23, and Jennifer Diaz, 21, who left with bags filled with a dress, skirt, shirt and handbags. The trendy styles they found at Fashion Co. “saves us a trip to LA,” Diaz said.

Both women like the of-the-moment fashions the store stocks. Some of the many evening-appropriate choices include a strapless red satiny dress with pleated skirt and leopard print belt ($31.95) and a strapless, gold belted tunic ($28.75) that would go perfectly with leggings.

If you don’t want to be quite as daring as a sequin bra top a la 1980s Madonna ($19.98), you can always choose a chocolate brown, velvety short jacket ($48.75) to wear over a more modest gold or black strapless corset top ($16.99). Another option is to pair pinstriped black dress pants ($21.75) with a satiny red blouse with rhinestone buttons ($21.75).

Of course, you’ll need something to keep warm, and the shop carries a luscious cream-colored coat with fake-fur trim ($59.85). There’s a whole section of belts, from skinny to heavy metal styles (from $1.49 to $14.75).

The shop carries a rainbow of evening bags in satin, sequined and velvet styles, and in every size and shape, to go with any evening outfit.

While the clothing side of the store will keep you busy, the non-stop wall of jewelry is the most eye-catching and amazingly affordable. From pearls to rhinestones to chunky wooden beads, you’re sure to find something to accent any outfit. For New Year’s Eve, choose something sparkly like a necklace made of big, round gold-tone and crystal beads with a long gold ribbon tie ($3.30). And don’t forget to pick up one of the show-stopping cocktail rings from a display case full of them.

After all, there is no time like New Year’s Eve to pile on the sparkle.
