Fashion Goggles: Jennifer Hudson gets a makeover and Sir Elton preps for the Oscars

The Golden Globes… the SAG Awards… the Grammys… the Oscars… It’s awards season in Hollywood, which means that the only fashion that matters right now is ‘red carpet fashion’. So this week Fashion Goggles is all about what Hollywood’s wearing, serving and doing for charity. (Oh yeah and there’s a few words about that little event that takes place in New York next week… what’s it called? Oh yeah, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!)

Jennifer Hudson Gets ‘Dream’ Makeover Courtesy of Vogue…

Not that the dreamy J-Hud hasn’t looked absolutely fabulous as she’s picked up one statue after another for her star-making turn as Effi in Dreamgirls, but I predict that Hollywood’s newest “It” girl is going to be looking even dreamier (if you can imagine that) in the coming months with the help of none other than fashion god, Andre Leon Talley, Vogue Editor-At-Large and ubiquitous Anna Wintour sidekick.

According to reports, Talley has taken such a liking to Miss Hudson that he’s decided to take her under his wing and oversee a complete head to toe makeover of the budding diva. For lucky Jennifer, Mr. Talley’s style direction is coming at an especially opportune moment, particularly given that in addition to being featured in the March issue of Vogue, she will also be featured on the covers of Giant and Essence Magazines.

Such a meteoric rise… such a huge breakthrough… Jennifer Hudson is simply reaping rewards that are long overdue. I met Jennifer years ago backstage after the American Idols tour and let me tell you she was one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. That’s why it’s so wonderful to see her career take such an amazing turn. It all couldn’t have happened to a more talented and gifted young woman, which is why I’m dying to see what she’ll wear to the Oscars and also why I’ll be crying like an American Idol reject when she wins.

Wave to the cameras for Africa…

Watch closely as your favorite female stars walk down the red carpet this awards season because some of the glittering gems they will be wearing might well have a mighty good purpose. The Diamond Information Center announced its Raise Your Right Hand Ring for Africa campaign at the kickoff of its 6th Annual InStyle Golden Globes Luncheon. Hollywood’s leading female nominees and presenters have been invited to proudly wear a Diamond Right Hand Ring on this year’s red carpet at one of the upcoming 2007 awards shows: Golden Globes, Grammy Awards or Academy Awards and a $10,000 donation will be granted in their name to a special project or cause of their choice benefiting Southern Africa.

The diamond industry hopes Hollywood’s leading ladies will wave their way to over $100,000 in donations for key projects or causes in Southern Africa. No mention of whether the diamonds sported by the stars will be conflict-free, but one thing is for sure… there couldn’t be an easier or more glamorous way to do a good deed this awards seasons as far I see it.

Sir Elton John’s Annual Oscars bash to be catered by West Hollywood favorite…

In other awards seasons news, Chef Wayne Elias, of the popular West Hollywood eatery Mark’s and Crumble Catering, has been tapped for the third year to prepare the fashionable nibbles enjoyed by well turned out A-list celebs like Elizabeth Taylor, Sir Ben Kingsley, Cate Blanchett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ozzy Osbourne, Lindsay Lohan, Helen Mirren, Nicolette Sheridan, Natalie Cole, Mary J. Blige, Josh Groban, Donatella Versace, Christina Aguilera, Beck, John Waters, and Kate Winslet post this year’s Oscar ceremonies.

A veritable army of more than 150 servers, bartenders and kitchen staff will be on hand to keep 1,100 of Hollywood’s grandest celebrities and one of the world’s biggest queens fed and happy throughout the night. Now only one question remains… Where on earth is my invite?

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York goes on tour…

Dreams do sometimes come true.

Believe it or not… New York Fashion Week may well be on its way to you! For years, ordinary folks have been glued to the Style Network watching recaps of every major fashion collection taking place under the tents at Bryant Park, all the while dreaming of actually being able to experience the shows live. Well residents of Houston, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco will find that their dreams have become reality when IMG rolls out FashionWeekLive in those cities in March of this year. That’s it… squeal my little fashionistas! No one will hold it against you. But wait it gets better…

In each city, the evening’s events will include a special champagne reception and pre-event cocktail in a grand lobby similar to fashion weeks around the world. Guests will then be led into the show venue to enjoy an hour long production, featuring the season’s most talked about designer looks modeled by world famous supermodels Naomi Campbell and Gemma Ward along with Caroline Winberg, Erin Wasson and others to be announced. In addition to the key looks presented throughout the show, FashionWeekLive will present a capsule collection from a different renowned designer in each city, who will be on hand to take their bow from the runway and celebrate with guests at a special on site VIP after-party.

Just as they are in New York’s Bryant Park, all of the FashionWeekLive events in Chicago, Houston and Dallas will take place in tented superstructures. In Chicago tents will be raised in Millennium Park, in Houston the show will take place in Water Wall in Uptown and in Dallas the events will be in Victory Park. In San Francisco the event will take place in Ft. Mason, with its spectacular views.

I can already hear the din of gay men buzzing with glee over this exclusive industry fashion event and the opportunity to mingle with Naomi and other fashionable folks while getting a first hand glimpse of the Fall 2007 collections from America’s leading designers before they are in store windows or even in magazine layouts. A comprehensive list of participating designers is expected be announced at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, February 2 to 9, 2007.

FashionWeekLive will launch in Dallas on March 6th, in Houston on March 8th, in Chicago on March 13th and in San Francisco on March 15th.
