fashion gets green (bra)
It seems that as well as the fashion industry making moves to get ethical with recent speculation over the end of size zero models, it is also going to get green.
The recent Sao Paolo Fashion Week in Brazil showcased many environmentally-friendly fabrics using the latest technology. E-fabrics as they are known are made from the recycled polyester fibres which come out of bottles.
Another variety of e-fabric is organic cotton which is grown without pesticides and as well as providing environmental benefits, the fabrics provide an income for poor Brazilian families who can earn money collecting the bottles needed.
Selma Fernandes, from the NGO Institute E, said: “Organic cotton costs more to grow, but people don’t realize that regular cotton is the worst crop for the environment because of the amount of pesticides it requires.”
These pesticides kill butterflies and birds while polluting rivers.
She added that fashion designers in Brazil now want to create demand for the designs.
