Dressed for success?

PILE on the diamonds, cake on the slap, and squeeze yourself into that million-dollar dress; it’s time for the Oscars.

This Sunday, Los Angeles will be welcoming more than 3,000 celebrities and movie moguls to the biggest awards night of the season.

And while rumours fly about whether Forest Whitaker will win actor in a leading role, the real question is, who will make the biggest fashion faux pas of the season?

Who can forget the horrific fashion disaster made by Icelandic pop star Bjork when she wore the swan dress created by Marjan Djodjov Pejoski. It put a new slant on the fur debate seeing a swan, albeit a fake one, wrapped around her neck. Tasteful.

Or what about the Jordan style pink Barbie dress created by Ralph Lauren and worn by actress Gwyneth Paltrow when she received her award for best actress in Shakespeare in Love? The woman with style definitely got dressed in the dark that day.

You’d have thought she’d have learnt a valuable lesson. Not likely.

In 2005 she returned in a dumb down version, in which her assets (and I’m not talking about her acting skills) were all on show.

Then there was that hideous green monstrosity worn by Hilary Swank back in 2000, when she went up to collect her award for Best Actress.

At best she looked like she’d been wrapped in a curtain à la Sound of Music, at worst she looked like a fat version of Batman’s Poison Ivy.

Perhaps she should have taken a leaf out of the style-book of Halle Berry, who seems to always get it spot on?

Who can forget the red wine dress by Elie Saab that she wore in 2002, which was sexy without looking slutty?

As the final alterations get under way, there will no doubt be some stars who are wondering whether they’ll make the cut.

We’ve got one word of advice ladies. If you’re unsure, stick to the little black dress.

Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johannson and Renee Zellweger have all passed the fashion test with flying colours, and all because they played it safe with the LBD.

So who will and who won’t pass the fashion test this year?

The best? Penelope Cruz gets our vote of confidence when it comes to fashion. No doubt this Latin diva will come up with something tasteful that makes a statement.

And the worst? Meryl Streep isn’t exactly well known for her fashion sense, so you’d assume she will be up for worst dressed, but our money is on Helen Mirren, who we think may make a right Royal mistake.
